Walter Derrer (left) of EMT in discussions with Reiner Grootenhuis during the headphone meet 2007 in DuesseldorfWalter Derrer of EMT is a professional down to the bone. He formerly belonged to Studer for practically endless years. He had travelled all the way from Switzerland to attend the Duesseldorf meet. Kudos to this. In the picture on the left you seem him demonstrate the Phoenix surround monitoring system to Richter Di.

EMT Phoenix surround setup during the headphone meet 2007 in DuesseldorfWhat I found absolutely remarkable was the quality and resolution of the Phoenix surround monitoring system. However, it seemed to be quite hard to understand for some of the attendees that the Phoenix system is a tool not a toy. Sales price of this Pro audio targeted system is 15.000,- EUR, tax _not_ included. You can't compare any game console's head tracking to the professional version that comes with this kind of system. The common field sensor alone costs around 2.000,- EUR for the manufacturer.

The price is of course definitely not the only indicator for professional equipment. I remember times when very cheap cassette decks by a far east manufacturer costed around 60,- EUR (This was still in the times of the German Mark "DM"). This cassette deck boasted with measurement figures not too far away from a Telefunken M15 which at that time costed around 10.000,- EUR or so. Well, there is a saying that goes "Tell me the desired measurement result and let me choose the method myself." So there was a tremendous difference between those two devices...

Connected to the Phoenix system was the only Stax headphone on the meet. The only Stax headphone during the Duesseldorf headphone meet 2007

Another attendee who had planned to bring some Stax headphones with him had to cancel his appearance due to an urgent appointment in his job.

Sometimes you have to priorise your behaviour connected to the place where you earn your money rather than to the one where to spend it.
